En 1945, les Japonais prennent contrôle de l’Indochine Française pour quelques mois. Début août 1945, à l’annonce des bombardements d’Hiroshima et de Nagasaki, le Việt Minh sous la direction d’Hô Chi Minh lancent des opérations de guérilla contre les troupes japonaises. Le 15 août, l'Empereur Hirohito annonce officiellement la capitulation du Japon et les troupes japonaises offrent leur reddition au Việt Minh. L’administration française est incapable de contrer les indépendantistes qui contrôlent Hanoï. Le 2 septembre 1945 est proclamée l’indépendance du Viet Nam. Ce n’est que progressivement en 1946 que les troupes françaises tentent de reprendre progressivement le pays, prélude à la Guerre d’Indochine.
