Аверс: легенда: IMP C C[ARAVSIVS P F AVG].

Аверс: описание: Buste radié, drapé et cuirassé de Carausius à droite vu de trois quarts en avant (A).

Аверс: перевод: “Imperator Cæsar Carausius Pius Felix Augustus”, (L’empereur césar Carausius pieux heureux auguste).

Обратная сторона

Реверс: легенда: PRVID-EN AVG (SIC !).

Реверс: Описание: Providentia (la Providence) drapée debout à gauche, tenant un globe de la main droite et un sceptre transversal de la main gauche.

Реверс: перевод: “Providentia Augusti”, (La Providence de l’auguste).

Комментарий

Mêmes coins de revers que les exemplaires du British Museum d’Oxford et de la vente Baudey, Pesce et Poinsignon 3 novembre 1979, n° 510. Les auteurs avaient mal lu le revers qu’il faut bien restituer par PRVID-EN AVG au lieu de PROVIDEN AVG.

CARAUSIUS

(late 286-293)

Carausius is named commander-in-chief of the fleet in charge of fighting against Frankish and Breton pirates. Proclaimed august in 286, he seized Brittany and part of the west coast of northern Gaul, between Scheldt and Seine. He was assassinated at the end of 293 by Allectus, his praetorian prefect.
