Pour cet exemplaire Daniel Compas signale dans son inventaire que “cette pièce présente à l’avers un portrait de Maximien avec une titulature de Dioclétien (erreur de gravure)”. De la même manière, Le Docteur Bastien signalait un cas semblable pour la septième émission (cf. Bastien n° 346a, pl. XXIV) repris par Daniel Gricourt dans son magistral article de la RBN., 1984, p. 98 et n° 8, p. 68 pour Maximien Hercule avec un portrait de Dioclétien. Une telle combinaison s’était déjà rencontrée lors de la sixième émission pour un aurelianus de Dioclétien avec le portrait de Maximien (cf. Bastien n° 261a, pl. XVIII). Nous serions donc en présence d’un cas similaire pour notre exemplaire où une titulature de Dioclétien serait encore une fois associée à un buste de Maximien Hercule. Cet exemplaire sera publié dans le Supplément III du Bastien, n° 246f techn..

For this example, Daniel Compas notes in his inventory that “this coin has on the obverse a portrait of Maximian with a title of Diocletian (engraving error)”. Similarly, Doctor Bastien noted a similar case for the seventh issue (see Bastien no. 346a, pl. XXIV) taken up by Daniel Gricourt in his masterful article in the RBN., 1984, p. 98 and no. 8, p. 68 for Maximian Hercules with a portrait of Diocletian. Such a combination had already been encountered during the sixth issue for an aurelianus of Diocletian with the portrait of Maximian (see Bastien no. 261a, pl. XVIII). We would therefore be in the presence of a similar case for our example where a title of Diocletian would once again be associated with a bust of Maximian Hercules.
