Grandson of Charles X, Henri was born on September 29, 1820. He is the son of the Duke of Berry who was assassinated on February 13, 1820 by Louvel. On August 2, 1830, Charles X abdicated in his favour, but Henri followed his grandfather into exile in England and then in Prague.
