A very good biography of the character can be found at http://fr. Wikipedia. org/wiki/Anthyme-Denis_Cohon which is, for the part which concerns this token: From the age of twenty-five, he enjoyed throughout the kingdom the reputation of a great preacher. Cardinal Richelieu had him appointed preacher to the king.. This ministry, which he fulfilled to the satisfaction of Louis XIII, earned him the esteem of this monarch and the bishopric of Nîmes, to which this prince appointed him in 1633.. He attended the assemblies of the clergy of 1636 and 1641, as deputy of the province of Narbonne. The new religious opinions had made great progress in Languedoc and the Protestant party dominated in Nîmes. Cohon defends the Catholic religion. In 1656, he obtained a decree requiring Protestants to contribute, like Catholics, to the costs of rebuilding the cathedral and an episcopal palace..

He introduced the Jesuits to Nîmes and endowed them. He particularly noted his charity in the contagion which had manifested itself in this city in 1640. Louis XIII having died on May 14, 1643, Cohon, who, on complaints brought by the Protestants, had been summoned to Paris, delivered there, the following August, in the church of Saint-Germain-l'Auxerrois, the funeral oration of the monarch, his first benefactor.

Advised to resign from his bishopric, because of the difficulties which had arisen between the Protestants and him, he exchanged it for that of Dol in Brittany; but having been unable to obtain bulls, he exchanged the bishopric of Dol again for that of Saint-Paul-de-Léon.

LANGUEDOC (STATES OF ...)

The Estates of Languedoc were made up of the archbishops and bishops of the province, nobles and delegates from the Third Estate appointed by the municipal bodies. Made up of working commissions, the States had the particular role of managing the accounts and distributing the direct royal taxes advanced in the form of a subscription by this country of states.. They also organized the means of communication through public works contracts. The tokens of the States were originally intended to be distributed to the members of the office of the account then, this distribution was extended to the members of the office of the recruits, to the president of the States, to the syndics general of the seneschalses, to the clerk for the king, to the stock exchange treasurer, etc.. They could also be given as a gratuity or as a tribute to external personalities.. Made in Paris with vintages between 1634 and 1790, these tokens were distributed in the form of purses of around one hundred tokens. The most recent "Directory of tokens and medals of the Estates General of Languedoc" was written by M. Gérard Pinto, Notebooks of the bibliophile agreement of Montpellier, 1993.
