Cet exemplaire fait partie de la série finale avec le titre de Père de la Patrie.
La série des Macrins à Beroea est très particulière pour plusieurs raisons.
Tout d’abord, les frappes sont en quantités importantes, supérieures à celles de Caracalla, et une grande partie sont des hybrides de revers avec la série de Caracalla. Les exemplaires hybrides portant la marque du quatrième consulat sont si nombreux qu’il semble impossible que tant de coins de revers aient été préparés pour Caracalla. Il faut bien admettre que ces coins portant la mention d’un quatrième consulat furent bien frappés pour Macrin, ce d’autant plus qu’un type hybride de revers porte une palme dans le champ, ce qui n’est pas connu pour Caracalla. Enthousiasme mal placé du maitre de l’atelier, admirateur de Macrin ?
Le graveur de l’atelier ne change pas, sauf pour un type de Diaduménien, particulièrement rare, et un type de Macrin qui sont d’un même graveur nouveau.
La série se divisant en deux par les graveurs (Macrin Prieur 889 et Diaduménien Prieur 897 pour le nouveau graveur, le reste pour celui déjà présent sous Caracalla), on doit remarquer que si les deux présentent des hybrides, seule la série au nouveau graveur présente la palme. Elle devrait se ranger chronologiquement en premier, la seconde présentant certains revers avec la légende PP ( Père de la Patrie) qui n’est pas donnée immédiatement.
La fameuse palme que l’on trouve dans le champ de la première série de Macrin et de Diaduménien laisse perplexe : distinction accordée à la ville par Macrin ?
Si l’attribution de cette série à Beroea, l’antique Alep ou Halab, est certaine par les initiales BE dans le champ du revers, l’interprétation du symbole ne l’est pas, ni même sa lecture. Pour Henri Seyrig dans Antiquités Syriennes 84, le symbole représenterait un lion cornu et ailé vu de face mais les commentateurs le décrivent plutôt comme un griffon vu de face. Nous suivons cette interprétation car tous les lions symboliques sur les tétradrachmes syro-phéniciens sont représentés de profil et aisément identifiables. La statue cultuelle représentée ici devait être très particulière pour ne présenter que deux pattes. Les deux courbes sur la tête en plus des cornes et des ailes ne rappellent rien de particulier. On ne connaît pas encore de frappe de présentation pour la série, avec le revers complètement consacré au symbole, sans aigle, et il est probable que la découverte d’un exemplaire permettra une interprétation plus pertinente.

The Macrini series at Beroea is very special for several reasons.

The famous palm found in the field of the first series of Macrinus and Diadumenianus leaves one perplexed: distinction granted to the city by Macrinus? If the attribution of this series to Beroea, ancient Aleppo or Halab, is certain by the initials BE in the field of the reverse, the interpretation of the symbol is not, nor even its reading. According to Henri Seyrig in Antiquités Syriennes 84, the symbol would represent a horned and winged lion seen from the front, but commentators describe it rather as a griffin seen from the front.. We follow this interpretation because all the symbolic lions on the Syro-Phoenician tetradrachms are represented in profile and easily identifiable.. The cult statue represented here must have been very unusual to have only two legs.. The two curves on the head in addition to the horns and wings do not recall anything in particular. There is no known presentation strike for the series, with the reverse completely devoted to the symbol, without the eagle, and it is likely that the discovery of a example will allow a more relevant interpretation..
