With the legend PECTAVIO, the attribution of this denarius leaves no room for doubt. But the reverse legend is very unusual, with + BETONISONIATRO, the two I's being treated in small segments almost as superscripts. It seems to be a distortion of the legend BETONI MONITARIO that we find on Belfort No. 3599, for the monetary BETO

POITIERS - PECTAVIS - CIVITAS PECTAVORUM

(late 7th - early 8th century)

Many denarii from Poitiers have a radiated head, as in Orleans. These denarii were struck at the end of the 7th and the beginning of the 8th century, since they are found in the treasury of Plassac (Gironde) hidden around 710-730. The Merovingian coinage of the Poitevine region is quite diversified, with triens and a wide variety of denarii. The proximity of the silver mines of Melle is certainly no coincidence.
