Après la chute de l’Empire Qing, la République de Chine est proclamée en 1912. Dirigée par le parti nationaliste du Kuomintang, elle est confrontée à des guerres internes, notamment contre les communistes. En 1949, battu par Mao Zedong, le dirigeant nationaliste Tchang Kaï-chek se replie avec son gouvernement sur l’île de Taïwan, où il maintient la République de Chine. Il y instaure un régime autoritaire, basé sur le parti unique, tout en posant les bases du développement économique. À partir des années 1990, Taïwan évolue vers la démocratie et devient un État moderne et prospère. Bien qu’elle dispose de son propre gouvernement, de son armée et d’un système politique distinct, la République populaire de Chine considère toujours Taïwan comme une de ses provinces et rejette toute forme d’indépendance formelle. Cette situation entretient des tensions constantes dans la région et complique la reconnaissance internationale de Taïwan

After the fall of the Qing Empire, the Republic of China was proclaimed in 1912. Led by the nationalist Kuomintang Party, it faced internal wars, particularly against the communists. In 1949, defeated by Mao Zedong, the nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek withdrew with his government to the island of Taiwan, where he maintained the Republic of China. He established an authoritarian, one-party regime while laying the foundations for economic development. Since the 1990s, Taiwan has evolved towards democracy and become a modern and prosperous state. Although it has its own government, army, and separate political system, the People's Republic of China still considers Taiwan one of its provinces and rejects any form of formal independence. This situation maintains constant tensions in the region and complicates international recognition of Taiwan.
