En 1957, six pays - l'Allemagne, la Belgique, la France, l'Italie, le Luxembourg et les Pays-Bas - ratifient le traité de Rome, point de départ de la Communauté économique européenne (CEE). Quand l'Union européenne est créée le 1er novembre 1993, la CEE devient la Communauté européenne (CE), un des trois piliers de l'Union européenne. Avec la fin de la structure en piliers en 2007, les institutions de la CEE perdurent en tant qu'institutions de l'Union.
Medal in capsule. In 1957, six countries—Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands—ratified the Treaty of Rome, the starting point of the European Economic Community (EEC). When the European Union was created on November 1, 1993, the EEC became the European Community (EC), one of the three pillars of the European Union. With the end of the pillar structure in 2007, the EEC institutions continue as institutions of the Union.

The Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) established its capital in Bonn until reunification. The German constitution was inspired by the reaction against Hitler's totalitarianism: the federal republic of 10 states (Länder) opposes Hitler's unitary reich. Each Land has its own parliament and government for local affairs. Foreign policy, defence, finance and economy come under the federal power made up of two chambers: the Bundestag and the Bundesrat, a President of the Republic and a Chancellor who exercises the real direction of affairs..
