Officiellement, la première exposition nationale suisse est celle de Zurich en 1883. Les suivantes eurent lieu en 1896 à Genève, en 1914 à Berne, en 1939 à Zurich, en 1964 à Lausanne et en 2002 à Bienne, Neuchâtel, Yverdon-les-Bains et Morat.

Le caractère « national » de ces expositions est donné par le fait qu'elles reçoivent des subventions de l'État et que celui-ci choisi les dates et lieux, néanmoins l'organisation et le contenu a toujours été défini par les comités d'organisation.

Celle de 1883 avait cependant des précédents comme les expositions bernoises d'art et d'industrie de 1804 et 1810. On considère parfois la troisième exposition de l'artisanat et de l'industrie de 1857 comme la première exposition nationale car elle présentait des objets qui n'étaient pas destinés à la vente directe (chronomètres, filtres, soupapes, presses, pompes, etc.)..
Officially, the first Swiss national exhibition was held in Zurich in 1883. Subsequent exhibitions took place in Geneva in 1896, Bern in 1914, Zurich in 1939, Lausanne in 1964, and Biel, Neuchâtel, Yverdon-les-Bains, and Murten in 2002. The \\\"national\\\" character of these exhibitions is given by the fact that they receive state subsidies and that the state chooses the dates and locations; however, the organization and content have always been defined by the organizing committees. The 1883 exhibition, however, had precedents such as the Bernese art and industry exhibitions of 1804 and 1810. The third exhibition of crafts and industry in 1857 is sometimes considered the first national exhibition because it presented objects that were not intended for direct sale (chronometers, filters, valves, presses, pumps, etc.).
