Sestus, placed in the Chersonese of Thrace was located at the entrance of the Hellespont in front of Abydos. It was an Aeolian colony founded by Lesbos. This is where Xerxes marched his army from Asia to Europe over a pontoon bridge during the Second Persian War in 480 BC..
