With the Nazi occupation of Italy, a war of liberation began in 1943 that engaged the entire Italian society across the board. It was a struggle that initially seemed desperate due to the preponderance of Nazi-fascist forces, but that would soon have a favourable outcome in the birth of our Republic. During that struggle, finding adequate funding immediately became a priority in order to stand up to the armies of Nazi Germany and the Republic of Salò. To this end, the National Liberation Committee for Liguria devised an innovative Liberation Loan project, which was implemented using the banknotes in circulation at the time by applying a star perforation and stamps with the face value of the banknotes multiplied by one hundred.
This unprecedented experiment was soon imitated in other regions by the respective Resistance authorities and, thanks to the discovery of the complete accounting documents in the archives of the Istituto Ligure di Storia della Resistenza e dell'Età Contemporanea “Raimondo Ricci” in Genoa (ILSREC), it is now the best-documented self-financing project in the history of the Resistance. The book follows its entire history, from its beginnings to its late repayment by the newly formed republican government, with ample historical notes and numerous testimonies by the protagonists of the time.
