La locomotive à vapeur “Best Friend of Charleston”, première locomotive reconnue comme ayant été fabriquée intégralement aux Etats-Unis pour le service commercial, a été utilisée en service régulier de transport de passagers sur un itinéraire de démonstration de six milles (9,7 km) à Charleston (Caroline du Sud). En 1831, la chaudière de la locomotive subit une explosion.
