Cette médaille de Giuseppe Cerbara et Giuseppe Girometti commémore l’incendie de 1823.
La basilique Saint-Paul-hors-les-Murs est une des quatre basiliques majeures de Rome, les trois autres étant les basiliques Saint-Jean-de-Latran, Sainte-Marie-Majeure et Saint-Pierre.

Sous le pontificat de Pie VII, dans la nuit du 15 au 16 juillet 1823, un incendie détruisit la majeure partie de l'édifice, mais l'abside, le transept et le cloître ne furent pas endommagés. Léon XII s'occupa de la reconstruction de l'édifice qui débuta en 1825. Il fut choisi de garder le plan paléochrétien et de construire un nouveau bâtiment.
This medal by Giuseppe Cerbara and Giuseppe Girometti commemorates the fire of 1823. The Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls is one of the four major basilicas of Rome, the other three being the Basilicas of Saint John Lateran, Saint Mary Major, and Saint Peter's. During the pontificate of Pius VII, on the night of July 15–16, 1823, a fire destroyed most of the building, but the apse, transept, and cloister were undamaged. Leo XII oversaw the reconstruction of the building, which began in 1825. It was decided to retain the early Christian plan and construct a new building.
