Willem Karel Hendrik Friso (Leeuwarden, 1er septembre 1711 - † La Haye, 22 octobre 1751) était prince d'Orange et prince de Nassau-Dietz. Il fut le premier héritier de la ville de la République des Provinces-Unies. Willem a étudié aux universités de Franeker et d'Utrecht. Il parlait plusieurs langues et s'intéressait à l'histoire. Le 25 mars 1734, il épouse Anna de Hanovre dans la chapelle française du palais Saint-Jacques. Le comte William obtint le doctorat honorifique de l'Université d'Oxford au cours de cette période et rejoignit la franc-maçonnerie. À son retour dans la République, des loges ont également vu le jour à La Haye et à Leeuwarden. En 1740, une autre guerre de succession éclata entre l'Autriche et la France. La république prit le côté de l'Autriche en 1747, lorsque les troupes françaises envahirent le sud des Pays-Bas. En quelques semaines, les troupes de Louis XV conquirent les lieux les plus importants de la Flandre zélandaise. Paniqué, le prince fut nommé le 2 mai 1747 capitaine général et commandant de toutes les régions de la République. Cette médaille a été décernée à cette occasion.
Willem Karel Hendrik Friso (Leeuwarden, 1 September 1711 - † The Hague, 22 October 1751) was Prince of Orange and Prince of Nassau-Dietz. He was the first heir to the city in the Republic of the United Provinces. Willem studied at the universities of Franeker and Utrecht. He spoke several languages and was interested in history. On 25 March 1734, he married Anna of Hanover in the French Chapel of St. James's Palace. Count William received an honorary doctorate from Oxford University during this period and joined the Freemasons. Upon his return to the Republic, lodges were also established in The Hague and Leeuwarden. In 1740, another War of Succession broke out between Austria and France. The Republic sided with Austria in 1747 when French troops invaded the southern Netherlands. Within weeks, Louis XV's troops had conquered the most important sites in Zeelandic Flanders. Panicked, the prince was appointed Captain General and commander of all regions of the Republic on May 2, 1747. This medal was awarded on this occasion.
