El Salvador was subjugated in 1523 by the Spaniard Pedro de Alvarado. He founded San Salvador in 1528. In 1821, El Salvador declared independence from Spain and became part of the Mexican Empire of Iturbide and then became part of the Republic of Central America, including Guatemala, Honduras, Salvador, Nicaragua and Costa Rica from 1825 to 1838. Final independence was proclaimed in 1841.
